Case study: Cash & carry

Metro

With more than 700 stores in 30 countries serving hoteliers to caterers, restaurateurs to retailers, Metro needs to stay competitive. And that requires flexible, reactive pricing.

Number of employees: >100 000
Number of stores: >700
Number of labels: approx. 2.2 million labels in Germany

Metro was the first major retailer in the world to roll out electronic shelf labels. In 1996-1999, labels were deployed throughout their Cash & Carry stores in Germany. Today, close to 60 Cash & Carry stores are equipped with the Pricer system in Germany, as well as in close to 10 other countries.

Save on costs and improve store processes

As a one of the world’s largest self-service wholesalers, Metro is at the front line of price fluctuations - which are driven not only by buying costs and supply changes, but also changing customer perceptions, demand, promotions, weather and even global events.

Problem

Problem

With a huge range of products ranging from fresh produce to dry goods, office equipment and more, Metro needed a simple, comprehensive, cost-effective solution for total price flexibility.

Implementation

Implementation

Metro started implementation in Germany. The project was led by their central IT team, to ensure that every installation would go smoothly and that there would be a consistent installation across all stores.

Solution

Solution

The solution allows central, direct control over all pricing, the precise start and end of promotional periods, and indirect control over other operational processes. It offers new possibilities such as micro-increases, smarter promotions and end-of-line (EOL) reductions to clear old stock - as well as improved stock management.

Result

Result

Significant reductions in price errors mean Metro has reduced complaints, saved the time and cost of investigating and correcting errors and improved customer relations. In Portugal, Metro reduced gaps on shelves from 1,000 to 300, simply by checking every label to see if stock was in the back room - releasing another 700 products for immediate sale.

Metro is continuing its evaluation of Pricer solutions to improve further its operations and eliminate price printing and paper labels.
